Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) to conduct his dissertation study that explores the barriers and facilitators to implanting HIV testing and prevention programs in the Latino church setting. This study will also develop a questionnaire that will assess HIV testing intentions and HIV stigma among Latino church-goers. Since he received the award 1 year ago, David has been working closely with two local Catholic churches that serve about 1,000 Latinos each week to conduct this research project. With the help of undergraduate research assistants, he has conducted several focus groups and interviews that will inform the development of a questionnaire. David is about to begin the second year of the project, which will include administering the questionnaire to Latino church-goers in order to assess the psychometric properties of the developed questionnaire. Congratulations David, and best wishes for a successful second phase of your project!

Psi Chi BBQ

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 164px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NjWZiaEnHXE/TnilwVcPBYI/AAAAAAAAAIw/cIJlsMVmJtY/s200/investigator.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5654451581971531138" />
Psychology Department cub reporter, N. Cognito, filed this report from the field…

PSI CHI and Psych Club Sponsor BBQ for Students and Faculty
Gray skies and chilly temps did not discourage students and faculty from joining Psi Chi and Psych Club members for lunch in the lobby of Cherry Hall on Friday September 16th. Senior Psych major Jairrah Mansfield and Juniors Kristina Trost and Viola Kleiser came by for some of the Jack Stack spread, and chatted with yours truly. They report their semester to be “busy but really good”! Senior Rodney Fritz was in the mix as well, and he admitted a serious interest in the bbq

Alyx Howard, sophomore Psych major was there with her friend Nikki Langland. Nikki is undecided yet about her major, but is interested in psych and criminal justice. They are both transfers from William Jewel College, and came to UMKC in search of great Psychology Department. This reporter believes they found it !

Senior Psych major Amanda Duplissie stopped by to take advantage of the opportunity to socialize. Judging from the din in the lobby, there was plenty of socializing going on! Amanda is interested in pursuing graduate work in counseling psychology after she receives her undergraduate degree.

Rob Hanson and Devon Gorajewski braved the cooler temperatures and sat outside on the front porch. Rob is a transfer from Rockhurst; his interests have morphed from business and marketing to industrial/organizational psychology. Devon is interested in pursuing a career in clinical psychology. They reported extrinsic motivations for attending the bbq, including the food of course, and some extra credit points for a Psych class. Whatever it takes, glad to have them around!

Freshman Crystal Williams stopped by to see what the Psych Department is all about, and to find ways to get involved in student activities. She’s interested in Psychology and Communication Studies and would like to pursue positive psychology. Welcome Crystal!

An extended conversation between this reporter and Angela Gutierrez, a psychology upperclassman, revealed the varied backgrounds and interests of our students. Angela has an architecture degree from Cornell University, and worked in that field for several years after obtaining her degree. However, architecture didn’t turn out to be as personally rewarding as she had hoped, so she’s pursuing a degree in psychology and plans to go into clinical psychology. We discussed the creative process that psychology and architecture might have in common, and the importance of finding a career that you can love. Heady stuff !

All in all, the event was a great success. Close to 100 undergraduate and graduate students attended, along with several faculty members. The event was planned by Psi Chi President Melanie Somogie and Treasurer Komal Dasani, along with faculty advisor Dr. Kym Bennett. Also instrumental on the day of the event were Daniel Folk (Psych Club President) and Kristen Epping-Flanery (Psychology Student Ambassadors). Funding for the event was provided by the Psychology Department and by Psi Chi. Psi Chi’s funding came from the Student Activity Fee Council, awarded based on a successful application to that Council.

Congratulations to all !

Drs. Jenny Lundgren and Amanda Bruce's New Research Projects

Congratulations to Jenny Lundgren and Amanda Bruce ! Their recent proposals to the Pilot and Collaborative Studies Funding Program (FY 2012) have been funded through Frontiers: The Heartland Institute for Clinical and Translational Research. See below for descriptions of their projects.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 156px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QSiYqvUbVAA/TnimwptC7dI/AAAAAAAAAI4/lEFGAkYK1-U/s200/congrats%2Bpic.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5654452686922378706" />

Principal Investigator: Amanda Bruce, PhD
"Food for thought: Can stomach surgery change the brain?"
While bariatric surgery is an effective long-term treatment for obesity, the physiological mechanisms associated with successful surgery are not well understood. Researchers have hypothesized that, following food consumption, surgical modifications elicit hormonal and neural signals that trigger feelings of satiety in the brain. Our group recently examined the association between weight loss and brain function using two separate patient-groups. In the first fMRI study, we scanned participants before and 12 weeks after receiving laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) surgery. In a second study, using the same neuroimaging protocol, we scanned participants prior to and 12-weeks following a behavioral weight loss intervention.

We now intend to directly compare participants from these two studies. In this project, we will
1. Characterize cortical differences at baseline, examining brain responses to visual food cues in limbic, paralimbic, and prefrontal brain regions.
2. Identify behavioral changes associated with bariatric surgery including self-reported hunger and cognitive control.
3. Examine longitudinal cortical changes associated with bariatric surgery in paralimbic, limbic, and prefrontal brain regions.

This would be the first project to examine the effects of bariatric surgery on brain physiology in comparison to a behavioral weight loss intervention. The findings from this research can improve our understanding of successful long-term weight loss and open additional avenues for new behavioral and pharmacological weight loss interventions.

Principal Investigator: Jennifer Lundgren, PhD
“Functional Neuroanatomy of Impulsivity in Obese Shorter and Longer Sleepers”
The long-term objective of this project is to understand better the relationship between sleep and obesity and, consequently, improve obesity treatment and prevention efforts. Although a relationship between sleep duration and obesity has been established, potential mechanisms by which sleep loss can lead to the development of obesity have not been adequately explored. One potential mechanism by which shorter sleep could contribute to obesity is through its detrimental effect on executive functioning, and impulsivity in particular. The aim of this project, therefore, is to examine the neural systems involved in impulse control using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a delay discounting paradigm in obese participants with shorter (<5 hours) and longer (7-8 hours) sleep duration. Obese shorter sleepers and obese longer sleepers, with actigraphy confirmed sleep duration, will complete behavioral assessments of eating, sleep, and impulsivity as well as complete a computerized delay discounting of reward paradigm while undergoing fMRI. Shorter and longer sleep groups will be compared on delay discounting of reward choices and neural activation in the limbic, paralimbic, and lateral prefrontal regions of the brain while engaging in the delay discounting task. Behavioral measures will be correlated with activity in these brain regions during the delay discounting task.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://umkcpsychology.blogspot.com/2011/09/drs-jenny-lundgren-and-amanda-bruces.html' title='Drs. On Sunday, she was back on the field for the first time since that day.

And this time the Royals were swinging pink bats, wearing pink sweat bands and, in some cases, running in pink shoes. It was all part of the Going to Bat Against Breast Cancer Program by Major League Baseball and Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Jeff Francoeur takes the field on Sunday with one of the honorary lineup of breast cancer survivors. (Chris Vleisides/Royals)Krigel's own battle with breast cancer includes a touch of irony. She was working for the Cancer Information Service when stricken.

"I was working there and decided I wanted to go to graduate school and become a PhD in clinical psychology and learn how to help cancer survivors adjust to the emotional aspects of having cancer," Krigel said. "And then I was diagnosed with cancer just after I was accepted into the PhD program. I went ahead and took the PhD program through my therapy and my surgery through the first year. I had a lot of good support from my husband, my kids and my friends, and my mentors at UMKC.

"It is ironic, but one in eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer. It was an office of 15, so statistically two of us at one point would be diagnosed with breast cancer."

She received a lot of help from her mentor, Professor Delwyn Catley of the University of Missouri-Kanas City, and the health care team at the University of Kansas Medical Center, including Dr. Carol Fabian.

She underwent treatment and surgery for about 1 1/2 years.

"I don't really look at it as beating it," she said, "because with breast cancer it can always recur. After five years you're not totally in the clear; statistically your chances of recurrence go way down, but with breast cancer it really can recur, so you just kind of look at every day and be thankful for that."

With her at the stadium on Sunday were her husband, former Kansas City jeweler Scott Krigel, sons Ari and Steven, and daughter-in-law Beth.

Today, she works for the KU Med Cancer Center.

"I care for cancer survivors on a daily basis," she said, "mainly breast cancer survivors but also other people living with cancer."

The Royals, joined by the Oakland A's in the pink-trimmed awareness effort, were well aware of the enormity of the disease.

"It's a great cause," right fielder Jeff Francoeur said. "Luckily my mom didn't have breast cancer or anything like that, but I know so many people that do and I even get text messages after the game to say how important it is to see us supporting the cause."

He was among the players wearing pink shoes.

"It's going to look weird but they're auctioning them off and all the money goes to that cause, so it's not even a question for me," Francoeur said.

Stephanie Komen, daughter of the late Susan G. Komen, sat in the Buck O'Neil Legacy Seat. Pitcher Kyle Davies, whose mother is a breast cancer survivor, was the honorary spokesman. The Royals took the field with each player accompanied by a breast cancer survivor.

In the end, 12 of the game's 18 hits were belted with pink bats used for the occasion. That included rookie phenom Eric Hosmer's first extra-base hit, a double high off the right-center wall, that produced his first RBI.

Many families have been affected by the disease.

"My wife Deborah's mom passed away from breast cancer, so it's near and dear to her heart," Royals manager Ned Yost said.

"They do it on Father's Day for prostate cancer, too. It's two good causes and brings awareness to them."

Dick Kaegel is a reporter for MLB.com. April 9, 2011 marked the first Heartland Health Network’s Pre-proposal Mini-grant Workshop where 35 people attended representing 26 church and faith based organizations. At present, we have received 25 letters of intent to submit proposals.

HHN launched the mini grant opportunity in early March promoting the event primarily through our core partner Calvary Community Outreach Network. A special thank you is extended to Rev. Williams for facilitating such a great turnout from the African American faith-based community. It was exhilarating to witness a packed room of people not only interested in decreasing the gap in health disparities affecting the African American community but also excited about building the capacity of their organizations to do so.

The HHN Mini grant is a competitive process offered to increase the capacity of our faith based network partners to increase their ability to collaborate with health science researchers. HHN will offer technical assistance for all applicants throughout the grant process by providing hands on support in developing the proposal narratives, budgets and supporting documentation. I presented at the National Academy of Neuropsychology in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and received the Dr. Ted Blau Student Poster Award. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between self-reported cognitive difficulties and medication adherence in Multiple Sclerosis (MS). 74 Secondary Progressive, Primary Progressive, and Relapsing Remitting MS patients were recruited from a local MS specialty clinic. Participants completed questionnaires measuring cognitive difficulties and auxiliary medication adherence. I really would like to thank Dr. Bruce, who helped me through every stage of the research process and writing the poster. I would also like to thank the graduate and undergraduate students that worked in the Clinical Neuropsych Lab who helped answer the many questions I had. David is in his fourth year of the Clinical Health Psychology Doctoral program and his mentor is Dr. Kathy Goggin. This award will provide support for David’s dissertation research which focuses on developing a measure to better understand the beliefs that lead to getting tested for HIV among Latinos who attend church. To complete this research, David will be collaborating with leaders from two local Catholic churches, the Black Catholic Implementation Team (BCIT) of Kansas City, UMKC faculty: Dr. Jannette Berkley-Patton and Dr. Tamera Murdock, and Dr. Cynthia Gomez from San Francisco State University.

Psi-Chi and Psychology Club Induction

Fall 2010

On the evening of Wednesday, November 3rd, the UMKC chapter of Psi Chi and the Psychology Club had their Fall induction ceremony, welcoming 36 new members.

Psi Chi: Jennifer Cosby, Kaelene Curry, Danielle Fera, Danthea Fernandez, Gregory Jacobs, Jhankar Kashyap, Allison Koerperich, Thao Nguyen, Karly Schleicher, Abby Sharp, Kyia Sonnier, Bethany Vroom, Britney Waterworth, and Marsha Wood.
Psychology Club: Malorie Champlin, Taneshia Cook, Chrissy Crocker, Kristen Epping, Zachary Hausner, Salvador Hernandez, Jhankar Kashyap, Brooke McCoy, Josh Munyan, Jedidiah Phipps, Katherine Polder, Rachel Regan, Quristion Reliford, Patrick Schmidt, Mallory Sheeran, Ra Nita Simmons, Anna Stelmach, Becca Sterling, Evelyn Welk, Nekisha Wheeler, Brandon Wilson, and William Yoder.

New members in attendance recited the Psi Chi ‘Oath of Membership’ and participated in a candle lighting ceremony. Organizers from HHN specifically hoped to reach African American community with their message of healthy lifestyles and demonstrate the power of collaborations between universities and community partners. Based on comments of attendees, it seems like that goal was achieved.

“The day was a perfect blend of celebration and cooperation among partners working toward a common goal. Of more than 600 grant proposals submitted from across the nation, UMKC was one of only approximately 30 proposals that were awarded.

HHN is slated to become a coalition of community partners working together to address health disparities by promoting wellness, facilitating health research and the dissemination of effective health intervention within the African American community.

Per Dr. Berkley-Patton, “HHN is really an outgrowth of ongoing research in our department and partnerships and programs that are already in place and working,” Berkley-Patton said. “What makes the formalization of HHN unique is that our community partners will be involved in every stage of the research process – from developing research goals to assisting with implementing research projects and interpreting data. HHN will allow researchers, health care providers and community leaders to work together to find the most effective communication and intervention strategies and translate those strategies into improved health outcomes for patients.”

Along with researchers from the UMKC Department of Psychology, the founding HHN partners are the Calvary Community Outreach Network (CCON) a faith based non-profit and the Kansas City Free Health Clinic (KC Free) a community based health service organization. With these partnerships, the opportunity to reach over 50 percent of the African American population who attend weekly church services and receive health services, the potential impact of this project is significant. The community need is evident when your hear Rev. Eric D. Williams, founder and CEO of the Calvary Community Outreach Network say, “I’m tired of doing funerals that could have been prevented, and we have to broaden our understanding of what a ministry is and what it can do. We need to look at all of the needs that our congregants have and use evidenced based approaches to address them. Working together through the HHN, we have a chance to really make a difference in addressing the health of our community.”

To be learn more about Heartland Health Network visit us at www.heartlandhealthnetwork.org

The Department of Psychology Congratulates All Recent Psychology Graduates!

At UMKC’s Spring 2010 Commencement, 64 students majoring in psychology received their Bachelor’s of Arts degree. Upon graduating from UMKC I plan to attend the University of Nebraska Lincoln, Doctoral program in Developmental Psychology. Outside of school, I like to hang out with friends and family! I knew psychology was the major for me when I took general psychology my senior year of high school. I fell in love with it then and want to study it as long as I can! I attribute my high academic achievement to the opportunities that I had doing undergraduate research in my 490 with Dr. Murdock and Dr. Filion. Also, the support I received from my family. Some tips I would offer students, who are currently pursuing their psychology degree at UMKC, would be to get involved in research as much as possible and find what it is that really inspires you.

Lacey Durbin

I began my studies at UMKC the fall 2008. Outside of school, I like to travel back to Illinois to spend time with my family, read books, and spend time with my fiancé. I knew psychology was the major for me because I find the aspects of the mind very intriguing and wanted to learn more. I attribute my high academic achievement to the hard work that I put into striving to be the best that I can. My parents also instilled in me the idea of a good work ethic and always believed that I could do anything I set my mind to. Some tips I would offer students, who are currently pursuing their psychology degree at UMKC, would be to try to absorb as much information about psychology as possible because it is very intriguing and can be used in everyday life. Also enjoy the wonderful teachers who are there to help you reach your life goals.

Alexandra Kuestersteffen
No Picture Available

I began my studies at UMKC the fall 2008. I am currently looking for a hobby, all the while driving my family and friends crazy with an overabundance of arts and crafts and/or sporting supplies. I knew psychology was the major for me because I've always wanted to help others with their problems, and counseling psychology felt like the best fit. I attribute my high academic achievement to my mom. She set high standards and helped me every day to achieve them. Some tips I would offer students, who are currently pursuing their psychology degree at UMKC, would be take as many psych electives as you can! We hope that the break has revitalized you, and you are ready to hit the books again! We enjoy seeing familiar faces around the department again, and being introduced to new ones.

We’re very excited because our enrollment for this semester has filled our classes to capacity, with the exception of just a few, and many of those only have 1 or 2 seats available.

During this time of year, we are also getting applications for our graduate programs. As of our graduate application deadline of January 15, we had 68 Clinical Psychology PhD applications, 10 Interdisciplinary PhD applications and 6 Master of Arts in Psychology applications for our just-reopened MA program.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Jeof7nHonoM/S1ZAn86RFKI/AAAAAAAAACU/1KHU418Xi9k/s200/Nelson2009.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5428597455951303842" />We have also gotten some great news from one of our recently graduated PhD students. Students gained a broad understanding of methods, theoretical concepts, and applications of psychology relevant to ethnic minorities. For one of the course activities, students worked in groups on a class presentation and paper based on a topic and a related theory discussed in the course.

Slideshow of Class Presentations

Some of the topics for the students’ group projects included: neighborhood disorganization and Latino communities, mental health and Asian Americans, and spirituality and health among African Americans. Here are just a few of the students’ comments about the class:

“I think all of us have learned something new about other cultures, heard from peers about their thoughts on multicultural issues, and its one step in a direction in bringing ethnic groups together. It has been an honor to be apart of the first class here at UMKC and I hope to use many concepts of multiculturalism that I have learned as I continue my educational professional career.” Carmen Benn

“Not only did Dr. Berkley-Patton present multicultural information that is much needed throughout our society, but she offered an environment promoting open communication and critical thinking. This class should be mandatory for all psychology majors in order to better understand and serve others.” Emilie Mendala

“This class has been very inspiring. Dr. Berkley-Patton as well as other students in the class helped open my eyes to certain multicultural topics. The structure of the class made us all comfortable to speak freely about our opinions and concerns. I feel this course should be mandatory for any undergraduate degree because the topics covered will help in any profession.” Jenni Branham

PsiChi/Psychology Club Bake Sale Success!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Jeof7nHonoM/SyLE0ejIgYI/AAAAAAAAACE/B9AOn3wHUIA/s320/BakeSale1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5414106107885420930" /> The Fall Semester PsiChi/Psychology Club Bake Sale was a great success! The two groups raised almost $300 on December 3rd and 4th from their table in Royal Hall! Psi Chi President Bryan Fox feared the sale might be a bust when he was staring down mountains of baked goods after the first two hours of the sale. Things picked up very quickly after that. As Fox announced in his e-mail to the groups' members “WE SOLD EVERYTHING!” Fox gave credit to all the officers, members and faculty in the department who contributed time, effort and baked goods for the sale. He also gave credit to the Department of Psychology Chair’s “highly-addictive Cinnamon coffeecake” and t-shirt sales, for pushing the total of money received to such a high amount. Money received through these fundraising efforts will be used in to fund the Spring 2010 induction ceremony and other events the organizations put on throughout the year.

Grad Psych Students Develop 411 on H1N1

Graduate students in the doctoral Health Psychology Interventions course have been working to apply what they are learning this semester by creating an intervention to increase H1N1 vaccination by students on the UMKC campus. Using health psychology principles they have developed a brief educational presentation H1N1 Slideshow and accompanying quiz available on Blackboard website. Students have also created a series of posters to encourage vaccination that will be placed around campus. Look out for the “KILL THE PIG” (referring to H1N1 or “swine flu”) posters. Instructors are being asked to consider offering extra credit for students who read the educational material and complete the quiz. Students are learning not only how to design community based interventions using sound psychological principles, but also gaining experience in navigating the challenges associated with putting a real intervention into place (the limited availability of the swine flu vaccine this fall being just one example!)

Psi-Chi and Psychology Club Induction Ceremony

On the evening of Wednesday, November 4th, the UMKC chapter of Psi Chi and the Psychology Club had their Fall induction ceremony, welcoming 24 new members.

Psi Chi: Nicholas Cale, Suqiang Chang, Komal Dasani, Andrea Garcia, Jennifer Lewis, Jennifer Moreno, Roxana Ruiz, Sara Shirk, Stephanie Thomas, and Cynthia Wilson.

Psychology Club: Brodie Barnard, Nicholas Cale, Ashaunta Dorch, Hannah Fugate, Andrea Garcia, Dillon Hall, Shelly Katoch, Allison Koerperich, Courtney Monzyk, Zach Ross, Kianda Simmons, Melanie Somogie, Breanna Wexler, and Cynthia Wilson.

New members in attendance recited the Psi Chi ‘Oath of Membership’ and participated in a candle lighting ceremony. Faculty member Chris Lovelace and graduate students Liz Duval and Stacia Gessner all had an amazing time looking around Berlin and attending the symposia and poster sessions at the SPR meeting. Dr. Lovelace made his annual appearance on drums with the SPR Blues Band during the closing Saturday Night Social.

During the meeting, Ms. Duval presented a poster entitled “Flashing a smile: Is startle sensitive to unconscious face processing?” in which she described her recent work with Drs. Lovelace and Filion on using the startle response to look at how we perceive and react to emotional faces. Dr. Lovelace’s poster, “Neural network evaluation of multi-modal startle eyeblink measurements”, was done in collaboration with Dr. Reza Derakhshani from the UMKC School of Computing and Engineering, Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. They presented their recently-developed approach to using artificial neural networks to quantify startle eyeblinks measured using the electromyogram and high-speed video.

We are delighted to announce that, during the meeting’s business luncheon, Liz Duval was announced as one of three winners of the Society’s Research Training Award. Her mentors for this project will be Dr Diane Filion and Dr. Lovelace from our department as well as Dr. Cary Savage from the University of Kansas Medical Center’s Hoglund Brain Imaging Center. Ms. Duval will learn to integrate functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging with startle eyeblink to investigate how people with social anxiety perceive and pay attention to emotional faces.

Following the SPR meeting, Dr. Lovelace and Ms. Duval traveled to Trier, Germany at the invitation of Dr. Hartmut Schächinger to attend a symposium for the University of Trier Psychoneuroendocrinology of Stress Research Group. Dr. Lovelace gave a talk describing his recent work, with the help of Ms. Duval, Dr. Filion, and Dr. Derakhshani, using high-speed video to record and measure eyeblinks. We had a wonderful time interacting with this lively research group, and had an amazing visit to the city of Trier.

In the accompanying picture, the three gentlemen in the front left are Dr. Terry Blumenthal (Wake Forest University), Dr. Lovelace, and Dr. Schächinger. To get us started, here is some of our latest news!

Congratulations Dr. Catley

We are extremely proud of Associate Professor Dr. Delwyn Catley, who is the primary investigator on a $1.5 million dollar grant from the National Institutes of Health to study methods of enhancing smokers’ motivation and readiness to quit tobacco smoking. Tobacco smoking remains one of the most significant preventable causes of death in the U.S. and although most smokers are interested in quitting, only one in five are ready to make a quit attempt at any point in time. The study will test the effectiveness of a method of motivational counseling for motivating quit attempts among smokers not yet ready to quit. It will also determine the effect of the motivational counseling on smoking cessation rates. The study will take place over 3 years and involves collaborators from the Dept of Psychology (Dr. Kathy Goggin), the School of Dentistry (Dr. Karen Williams), KU Medical Center (Dr. Kimber Richter), and The University of Montana (Dr. Kari Harris). Congratulations to all.

Staying in Touch

If you have any "goings on" or accomplishments that you would like to be considered for posting on this site, please send an entry of up to 250 words (plus 2 photos) to the department’s award-winning administrative assistant, Catherine Rawlings (rawlingsc@umkc.edu).
